A Guide to Staying in Montpellier, Cheltenham

Posted by Daniel Noori on 05/30/2026, Category: Article

Montpellier is the heart of Cheltenham. It’s where the town’s Regency character is most vivid — wide, tree-lined avenues, iron balconies, elegant terraces — and where much of the best eating, drinking, and simply wandering happens. If you’re choosing where to base yourself in Cheltenham, Montpellier makes a compelling case.

Here’s everything you need to know about staying in this beautiful part of town.

What is Montpellier?

Montpellier is a residential and commercial district in the south-west of Cheltenham’s town centre. It takes its name from the French city (Cheltenham was once marketed as the ‘healthy spa town’ for those who couldn’t afford the journey to the continent), and the architecture reflects that aspiration: grand Regency villas, elegant crescents, and ornamental gardens.

The centrepiece is Montpellier Walk and Montpellier Gardens — a short promenade lined with boutiques, cafes, and restaurants, overlooked by the famous caryatid figures that have become something of an emblem for the town. The gardens themselves are beautifully maintained year-round and host outdoor events throughout the summer.

Where to Eat and Drink in Montpellier

Montpellier is one of the best-served parts of Cheltenham for food and drink. A few highlights:

Bakers and Roasters on Montpellier Walk is the go-to for morning coffee — excellent single-origin espresso, good pastries, and a terrace that catches the morning sun. The Ivy Montpellier Brasserie anchors the Walk for all-day dining, with a beautiful Regency interior and reliably good food. Montpellier Chapter (the boutique hotel) has a quietly excellent bar that’s worth knowing about for an evening drink.

Further into the neighbourhood, Purslane on Suffolks Road is a long-standing favourite for serious dining — the kind of place that rewards a reservation. Prithvi on Bath Road is widely considered one of the best Indian restaurants in the Cotswolds, and booking is essential.

Shopping and Things to Do in Montpellier

Montpellier Walk has a good selection of independent boutiques — jewellery, homeware, clothing — alongside the usual café culture. The Saturday market in Montpellier Gardens runs through the warmer months and is excellent for local produce, artisan goods, and general browsing.

The area is also extremely well-placed for walks. From Montpellier, you can be in Imperial Gardens within five minutes, at Pittville Park within twenty, and on the edge of the Cotswolds within forty by car.
