Activities
Cheltenham offers not only a picturesque setting to cosy up for Christmas but plenty of festivities to keep you and your loved ones in the Christmas spirit. I’ve listed below some of my favourite Christmas-themed activities Cheltenham has to offer, as well as local areas which are a short train or car ride away!
Ice Rink
It is a classic festive activity. Cheltenham has its very own ice rink, available to book from November 29th to January 5th. The joyous music and cosy Christmas lights create a warm, merry atmosphere in the stunning imperial gardens. The rink is available for ages three and upwards, so it is another perfect family outing.
Christmas Lights
There’s something so magic about walking through a trail lit with twinkling lights and the sound of rustling leaves. We would recommend several light trails and attractions in the Cheltenham area. Here are the top three light attractions:
- Cotswold’s Farm Park Enchanted Lights Trail – Located just 30 minutes from Cheltenham
- Blenheim Palace Christmas Lights Trail – Located about an hour from Cheltenham
- Christmas at Westonbirt – Just under an hour’s drive from Cheltenham
Theatre and Pantomime
Cheltenham Playhouse and Everyman Theatre also have two exciting pantos on, which are guaranteed to get you feeling festive! Aladdin will be wowing crowds at the playhouse, whilst Jack and the Beanstalk will certainly get audiences giggling.
The Cheltenham Santa Train
An iconic feature of Cheltenham Christmas is the Santa Express. It starts at the Cheltenham Racecourse station and transports passengers to the magical ‘North Pole’, where they can meet Santa before hopping back on the steam train to Cheltenham Racecourse Station. The experience normally takes around 2 1/2 hours to complete, with a half-hour train journey each way. Enjoy the magic of Christmas on this festively decorated, newly restored steam train, setting the stage for an unforgettable experience!
The Christmas meeting – Cheltenham Racecourse
Experience the thrill of Cheltenham with a day at the races! In the lead-up to Christmas, Cheltenham will host an exhilarating two-day racing event from Friday, December 13, to Saturday, December 14. With a total of 14 races scheduled, there’s no shortage of excitement to get the whole family into the festive spirit. Plus, under-18s can attend for free!

Christmas Markets
No festive season is complete without exploring a Christmas market, where the food, drinks, gifts, and vibrant atmosphere come together. Cheltenham boasts its own charming Christmas market in the town centre. However, if you’re up for a short drive or train ride, you can discover some of the finest markets in the UK nearby.
Cheltenham Christmas Market:
Cheltenham is lucky to host two Christmas markets during the festive season: the Cheltenham Christmas Gift Market, which runs from the 21st to the 24th of November, and the Cheltenham Arts and Crafts Market, which runs from the 12th to the 22nd of December. The Christmas Gift Market is bursting with stands selling food, drink, and gifts. It’s a Cheltenham classic and ideal if you want to do your Christmas shopping! It is located in the city centre along the promenade.
The Cheltenham Arts and Crafts Market is another great place to gather your Christmas gifts. The stalls host unique Christmas gifts, homeware and handmade goods by local producers, craftspeople and artisans, from jewellery to glasswork and woodcraft to original art prints, set against a backdrop of elegant Regency buildings. It is located along the promenade and is a firm Cheltenham favourite for getting you in the Christmas spirit.
Bath Christmas Market:
Wander the charming cobblestone streets of Bath’s historic city centre and immerse yourself in the festive ambience. Explore an array of talented independent artisans from the South West and beyond at the Bath Christmas Market. This delightful open-air event is free and guaranteed to lift your holiday spirit. The Market runs from 28th November to the 15th of December and is just over an hour’s drive from Cheltenham.
Bristol Christmas Market:
Nestled in the heart of Bristol City Centre, our Christmas market features more than 35 unique stalls, festive entertainment and visits from Santa and his elves. Guests can savour tasty drinks and live music at the cosy Jäger Barn Bar, or reserve one of the private Gondolas for a tranquil escape from the lively market atmosphere. The Market runs from the 1st of November to the 23rd of December, giving you plenty of time to visit. It’s only just over half an hour’s drive from Cheltenham.
